Triumph’s Triumph

Posted on January 12th, 2010 by Biker under Biker Friendly, Iron Biker News, Triumph.

ATLANTA (January 12, 2010) – Triumph Motorcycles has declared the company’s continued gains in market share and year-end increase in sales were a successful conclusion to a very challenging 2009, which also marked the 15th anniversary that Triumph returned to North America.

Triumph has consistently gained market share in the United States every year for the past five years according to the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). The sustained growth makes Triumph one of the fastest growing motorcycle manufacturers in country and one of only two marques that never lost market share in that time period.

Sales of Triumph motorcycles in the United States increased 5.49 percent in December 2009 over the same period the prior year, which is significant as most manufacturers reported double digit decreases.

“The Triumph team and our network of dealers did a fantastic job of keeping a positive attitude in 2009, and their efforts have paid off as customers continued to show strong support for Triumph,” said Mark Kennedy, CEO of Triumph Motorcycles North America. “We are really optimistic about the New Year. Our all new 2010 Triumph Thunderbird has great momentum from being named Cruiser of the Year and we’re introducing some exciting new models to Triumph’s line of Urban Sport motorcycles.”

Triumph also did extremely well in Canada by producing a year-long sales increase of more than 20 percent over the same period in 2008. The achievement makes Triumph the fastest growing motorcycle brand in Canada.

This past summer Triumph introduced the all-new 1600cc parallel twin Thunderbird, which earned a number of ‘Best Cruiser’ accolades from the motorcycle enthusiast news media. The Thunderbird complements Triumph’s existing cruiser line that includes the 865cc America and Speedmaster models and the 2300cc Rocket III line.

Triumph also manufactures a variety of standard and sport motorcycles that range from the iconic Bonneville to class-leading sport bikes such as the Daytona 675, Street Triple and Speed Triple.

While Triumph initially gained global notoriety for its motorcycles in the 1950s and 60s, the company encountered difficulties in the 1970s. In 1983, British entrepreneur John Bloor purchased the marque and immediately began working on its return to prominence. Triumph re-emerged to the world stage in 1990 with a new line of classic parallel twin and innovative three-cylinder motorcycles that have become the hallmarks of the Triumph model range.

Kennedy continued, “Triumph has a wonderful heritage. As a company, we understand the importance of perseverance and working toward the future. It’s that culture that has enabled Triumph to be such as strong and resilient company. We’re ready for 2010.”

The full range of Triumph motorcycles are available at authorized Triumph dealers throughout North America. To find your local Triumph dealer, please visit www.TriumphMotorcycles.com.

Why Softail Frames Create a Comfortable Motorcycle Ride

Posted on January 15th, 2009 by Biker under Biker Friendly, Iron Biker News, Rallies and Rides.

Softail frames for motorcycles are also known as another type of swing arm frame  which provides the soft ride, with the look of a hardtail. Motorcycles with softail frames ride quite different than those with rigid frames. The kidney-jolting road bumps feel much smoother and most riders find these bikes more comfortable for long trips.

How, exactly, does the softail frame with it’s  swing arm assembly work to provide the softer ride? The rear tire of the cycle must be connected to the frame. The difference between the two frame types is the way in which this connection is made.

A softail frame contains a pivot joint between the rest of the frame and the rear wheel assembly which supports the wheel and the rear suspension. Also, in a softail, there is rear suspension, including shock absorbers which remove some of the bumps that can be so hard on the rider’s back.

The softail swing arm attaches to the frame behind the center of gravity on the motorcycle and the pivot joint is almost always higher than the hub of the rear wheel. This provides stability and prevents ’squat’ when accelerating.

Alot of stock motorcycles are softails. Custom built bikes can have either type of frame and many of the highly customized cycles have hardtail  frames. For riders that really prefer the comfort of the softail ride, there is no reason not to fully customize a softail  frame. Even choppers, raked and lowered with long, extended fork assemblies can be built around a softail  frame.

So, you might see why some people strongly prefer a softail frame over a rigid frame. It’s really simple; it is difficult to enjoy long road trips where most of the day is spent on the pavement which is frequently less than smooth.

As more and more motorcycle enthusiasts, many of which are baby boomers, get a bit older, comfort can be a major factor. No longer are motorcycles something that only the young ride for transportation. It’s not uncommon to see groups of motorcycles ridden by retirees heading to Bike Week, Biketober Fest, or another major motorcycle gathering. America is aging and therefore more riders are older and seek the comfort factor.

One major difference between softail frames and the hardtail frame is the way the road feels to the rider. Hardcore bikers tend to love the way the hardtail allows the feel of the road to be felt through the frame, making the rider feel almost as if they are part of the road.

Is a softail frame the right choice for you? That is a question only you can answer. It all boils down to your riding stamina, how much you love that sense of feeling the road through the wheels, up into the frame and into your body, and sometimes just by what motorcycle you are accustomed to riding.
